Who is This Chick?
Updated: Jan 7, 2019
I am a wife of 12 years to my teenage boyfriend, Rayj...he was named before the rapper just saying, and mom of two girls. I entered the beauty industry as an assistant at my dream salon in Virginia Beach, VA. Shortly after, I decided to make my parents question all the things by telling them I was no longer planning on pursuing a college education and instead girlfriend was going to be a hairstylist. I was able to get licensed through the Virginia State Apprenticeship program which was amazing! I worked at the salon full time, learning and starting to build a clientele and then two nights a week would go to the vocational school for theory classes. After passing my state boards I stayed at the same salon for the next year. Six months before my 21 birthday and 3 months before getting married I took a huge leap and went out on my own ...WHAT?! Yes, my soon to be father in law sat me down and told me all of the reasons why I could do this and so I did! I started in a booth rental salon building up my clientele and eventually went on to build my own studio space in the bottom of our home. By 24 I was grossing a six figure income as an independent stylist.
In 2010 my husband and I took the second largest leap of our relationship and moved 1,000 miles away to South Florida. When we moved to Florida I spent time as a "stay at home mom" to raise our first daughter and became pregnant with our second. During this season I put my career on hold for Rayj to pursue being an owner and operator of a Forbes top rated franchise. After about 2 years I started easing my way back in, one day a week, as a salon suite renter. Fast forward to today and I have not only re built my business from the bottom for a SECOND time, but I am now commanding the highest price per service that I ever have.
I am passionate about this industry and the ability to be an artist and an entrepreneur. I have developed methods that have worked for establishing, building and maintaining clients. I have created So You're a Hairstylist as a resource for industry professionals just getting started or those who are feeling lost. My goal is to cultivate a community of stylist that can learn business tips and tricks from EACH OTHER so that EVERYONE can get the most out of this profession as possible.
